The Importance of Becoming a Global Citizen

            Global citizenship can be viewed as an extension of citizenship of a country or state, to the worldwide community of humanity. It is a concept that has gained significant attention in recent years with the increasing interconnectedness of the world. As such, it is of significant importance as it helps one to become aware of global issues as well as challenges, broadens/widens connections with people from different parts of the globe through business or social interactions and it helps to develop and gain more knowledge and expertise. It is a form of universal citizenship, where the inhabitants of the world belong to one human race with shared responsibilities. The purpose of addressing this concept is to encourage individuals to reflect beyond their own borders and contemplate how they can contribute to a just and sustainable world. This paper aims to explore the concept of global citizenship, its antecedents and outcomes, and its implications to individuals and the society at large.

Distinction Between Globalism and Globalization

While globalism and globalization are closely related, they are distinct in meaning. Globalism is an ideology based on the idea of a world that is interconnected across multi-continental distances (Stucke, 2009). It promotes free trade and the movement of people across geographical regions, giving room for collective action that extends beyond the boundaries of individual nations. On the other hand, globalization is the process of delocalizing the manufacturing process where multinational corporations invest in foreign lands (Stucke, 2009). Thus, while globalism is driven by the importance of global cooperation, globalization is driven by the expansion of trade and investment across national borders.

The Benefits of Global Citizenship in the World of Technology

Being a global citizen in the wake of modern technology can help an individual develop essential cross-cultural skills, broaden their horizons, and make better decisions that align with personal goals (Meletiadou, 2022). By collaborating with experts and peers from diverse backgrounds, one can remarkably achieve academic goals from the information and resources acquired. Additionally, global citizenship in a technologically advanced world greatly improves an individual’s chances of building relevant professional networks from across the globe. In essence, modern technology breaks physical barriers to communication across the borders, enhancing the overall development of a global citizen.

The lack of Consensus Among Theorists Concerning the Definition of Global Citizenship

            The differing opinions between theorists for global citizenship definition emanates from the use of interchangeable terms to describe the construct, and the influence of their respective specialties in defining the term (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2013). The use of numerous terms such as post-national, world, universal, and transnational citizenship creates confusion and ambiguity as some theorists use these terms conversely, while others make explicit distinctions between them. Additionally, theorists have different assumptions about what constitutes global citizenship owing to their differing disciplines. For instance, theorists in philosophy emphasize morality and ethics, while those in education highlight global awareness. In other cases, some theorists may discredit the concept altogether as idealistic and unfeasible given that no formal recognition of universal group membership exists. From the literature, global citizenship refers to the recognition and considerate acceptance of cultural diversity, with a high sense of accountability towards a just and sustainable society.

Outcomes of Becoming a Global Citizen

The outcomes of becoming a global citizen are that it encourages appreciation of diversity and also promotes social justice.

Valuing Diversity

            Valuing diversity is the acceptance of all individuals, regardless of their cultural values, beliefs, and norms (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2013). The appreciation of multiple identities helps an individual understand and appreciate people from different backgrounds. This makes it possible for people to live in harmony and recognize their connection as one human race. Appreciating cultural diversity also suppresses the effects of salience of an individual’s human identity, making people more likely to manifest noble behaviors such as forgiveness towards others for past harm (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2013). As a global citizen, the appreciation of cultural diversity makes an individual become more accommodative of others, regardless of their background.

Social Justice

            Social justice means the attitudes and beliefs that individuals hold concerning human rights and fair and equal treatment of all individuals (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2013). It aims to create a fair and just world where all humans have equal opportunities for growth and development. Thus, promoting social justice can help alleviate inequalities that exist in the world, by creating more inclusive and just societies that acknowledge the rights and dignity of individuals. It is an important aspect of global citizenship as it enhances the recognition of how individual actions can have lasting effects, particularly on those who are vulnerable. Therefore, in order to become a global citizen in a world where oppression is prevalent, it is important to develop inter-cultural intelligence and devotion to social justice.

Individual Experiences that Demonstrate the Development of Global Citizenship

The first individual experience that demonstrates the development of global citizenship

In regards to cultural diversity is through engagement with people of different cultures. I have engaged with people from diverse cultures on business and academic grounds in the past. During such times, I have learnt to acknowledge and appreciate cultural differences that exist, in order to gain a better comprehension of the world. A conscious understanding of cultural differences helps individuals shed personal biases about people from different communities and fosters unity. It is on this basis that I have realized that embracing socio-cultural differences is an important step towards becoming a global citizen. As a result, I have become more tolerant of other people’s customs and way of life. For instance, I had an African friend who, no matter how much I convinced him to take pork, he would always decline my request. I decided to inquire from him why he never took pork and he informed me that it was against his cultural beliefs to eat pork as it was considered unholy and unclean. It’s from that instance that I learned to respect other people’s beliefs and cultural practices.

The second example that demonstrates global citizenship in regards to social justice is through volunteering in different programs. I have volunteered and supported social justice causes and joint initiatives to raise awareness and contribute to social change and community development. Through volunteer work and social activism, I have been engaged in purposeful activities that promote social change and human development. By extending opportunities to the disadvantaged, I have learnt the importance of social justice in creating a society that promotes social inclusion. This has further promoted my sense of responsibility and commitment towards creating a fair and just world for all. Social justice can help reduce the inequalities that exist in the world and promote actions that alleviate inequality, injustice, poverty, and underdevelopment. Thus, commitment to social justice is an essential aspect of being global citizenship.

Courses that have been Impactful in Developing my Sense of Global Citizenship

            One of the courses that has been influential in developing my sense of global citizenship is Introduction to Ethics and Social responsibility. This course provides an understanding of ethical theories that govern the accountability of individuals in fulfilling their civic duties, as well as social issues and actions that benefit the whole society. The second course is Introduction to Psychology. This course provides an understanding of how cultural difference can affect behavior and mental processes, thus promoting an appreciation for diversity. These courses provide insights for critical reflection on social issues, such as universal human rights and social justice, which are fundamental concepts of global citizenship.

Conclusion

            The benefits of global citizenship and its importance in today’s interconnected world need not be over-emphasized. It highlights the benefits of global citizenship to an individual and the society at large. Based on the fact that the world is becoming increasingly interconnected, it is important to develop a greater sense of responsibility in understanding and appreciating the diversity of the world’s cultures. This promotes respect and tolerance towards others and enhances sustainable development and social well-being. The ultimate challenge is to develop societies that are inclusive and that respect the inherent dignity of every individual for a better world.
