Social Networking Interview

Interviewee

For the social networking interview, I interviewed Mr Jones, an operations manager at Starbucks. Mr Jones explained that he has worked in operations management for nearly 15 years, but as an operations manager for eight years. He has been working at Starbucks for the past three years, a role he says has greatly advanced his expertise in the field and bettered him professionally. During the past three years, the interviewee explains that he has had the opportunity to practice essential operations management components. He has improved the store’s performance while growing his list of achievements.

Operations Manager Role

The operations manager of an organization plays a fundamental role in its management. In this context, the interviewee’s role involves overseeing high-level human resource duties and enhancing the organization’s overall operations. These duties include setting standards, ensuring compliance, formulating operating standards, procuring the necessary resources, and improving organizational performance. Essentially, the operations manager is responsible for ensuring the availability of crucial resources and ascertaining that all factors within the company work together for organizational success. The interviewee explained that his role in the organization constitutes mentoring employees, establishing ways to enhance quality in the production of goods and offering services, customer satisfaction, and implementing best practices in the company.

Operations management is vital to this organization for several reasons. Most importantly, it facilitates the recognition and optimization of processes in production. It allows the company to track production, keep up with changing consumer preferences, promote sales while reducing costs, increase revenue, and enhance organizational growth. In this context, the operations manager plays a vital role in making essential policy and strategic decisions, developing operational procedures and policies, promoting customer satisfaction and enhancing the growth and success of the company.

Subject Selection

I selected JB as the subject of my interview for several reasons. First, he works as an operations manager. This was the primary reason for selection, as he met the key criterion. Beyond being an operations manager, the period he has worked for the organization has been characterized by significant organizational growth and greater customer satisfaction. This indicates that he is experienced in operations management and can offer valuable information. Another reason for selecting this individual to participate in the research is his attitude and ethics. The subject was friendly, open, and willing to discuss his position in the organization and his role in ensuring organizational success.

Interview Questions

As part of the interview, I asked several questions, most of which focused on the role of an operations manager. Some of the interview questions included;

  • What role do you play in the company, and what tasks does it entail?
  • What is the importance of operations management in such an establishment?
  • How do you measure your success at the end of a certain period or project?
  • Do you always achieve your targets, and if not, what do you do about it?
  • Must operations management align with organizational goals?

The interviewee explained that he is the operations manager, and in the organization, this means overseeing all aspects of the company’s operations. He explained that he is responsible for planning, strategizing, and organizing daily operations. He creates routines and implements strategies to ensure production goals are met. He also oversees customer service at the organization.

The subject also explained that operations management is fundamental in all organizations. In this specific organization, it is of utmost importance considering that despite focusing on product development, the organization also encounters customers in its daily operations, thus the need to focus on services as well. He explained that, at its core, operations management facilitates the effective running of the company.

Mr Jones explained that there are distinct ways to measure success depending on the task. However, in the general organizational operations and his role as the operations manager, he measures his success based on organizational performance. This includes consumer satisfaction, quality of products, sales target achievement, and revenues.

Operations managers do not always achieve set goals and targets like in other positions. He explained that an operations manager cannot work alone, and the efforts of his team members are also crucial determiners of success or failure. If he fails to attain set goals, he assesses what might have gone wrong and engages his team to come up with better and more effective solutions.

The interviewee also elaborated that since operations managers work towards organizational goals, any goals or objectives they set must, therefore, align with those of the organization. Operations managers are part of the company; their work and goals must testify to this fact.

Organization Information

Starbucks is an American multinational organization that specializes in selling coffee. The company began in 1971 and has grown to become one of the world’s most recognized brands operating in multiple countries worldwide. The United States has approximately 15,873 Starbucks stores (Statista, 2022). Some of these stores are licensed, whereas others are company-operated. Considering its products, this company has shares in the food and beverage industry and the retail coffee and snack store industry.

Starbucks has a roastery and retails coffee at its coffee shops. Coffee is the company’s primary product. The menu at its coffeehouses constitutes hot coffees, teas and drinks, cold coffees, blended beverages, iced teas, and cold drinks. It also offers snacks, sweets, baked products, and oatmeal, among other foods. As part of its larger business, it also sells whole-bean and instant coffee. Starbucks also sells merchandise such as mugs and bottles and offers gift cards. Although it offers many products, its key product is coffee. The rest are just supplementary products.

Lessons Learned

The social networking interview was very educative. It presented an opportunity to connect, communicate, and share information about operations management. It was a chance to engage with an individual working as an operations manager, which means one who has had the chance to apply operations management concepts and knowledge to practice and figure out what works and does not. Therefore, I perceived the interview as an opportunity to inquire and learn about operations management in practice, and I got the chance to learn several lessons from experience.

One of the essential lessons I learned is the importance of organizational operations management to any organization. Regardless of how large or small an organization is, operations management remains a crucial component that must be effectively implemented if the business is to succeed. I learned that operations managers focus on all aspects of the organization that can affect the company’s performance in one way or another. This means focusing on resources, employees, strategies, policies, and processes.

Apart from this, I also learned that operations management depends on other organizational areas and requires collaboration with other areas to succeed. Essentially, an operations manager needs to work with others in the company. Additionally, I learned that depending on the establishment or organization, the roles of the operations manager might differ slightly. However, regardless of the differences, what is most important is ensuring that achievements align with organizational goals and that the consumers are happy with the services or products they receive.

Reflection

This assignment is important in this course for many reasons. One reason for its importance is that it allows for interaction and connection with an experienced individual. The social networking interview allows one to gain important information and share information and ideas. It presents the opportunity to perceive the topic in a different context and better understand it. This assignment thus presents a learning opportunity for students outside the classroom, creating an interesting experience.

This assignment is also important because it presents learners with an opportunity to learn about operations management from a different viewpoint. Usually, students only learn the theory part of things and rarely get to test out how well these theories work in real life. Although the assignment does not involve the application of theories, it allows one to hear from one that has had the chance to put the theories into practice. Therefore, one gets the idea of applying theories and what matters most, hence knowledge on where to focus more. The social networking experience thus draws students’ focus on what is actually important in their careers as operations managers.

Follow-up Activities

Mr Jones offered a lot of valuable information during the interview. Aside from responding to the interview questions, he also explained operations management as a topic, how it applies to businesses, why it is important, how to implement it successfully in the organization, and how to ensure its effectiveness. He extensively engaged me on many issues that he thought were important to note and those that related to the interview questions. the subject presented ideologies and encouraged me to think ‘outside the box’ even when perceiving concepts related to operations management.

The interviewee also suggested two follow-up activities. First, he asked me to investigate the role of operations management in the 21st-century corporate world, explaining that advancements in technology and enhanced globalization are changing businesses and making operations management more important. Secondly, he encouraged me to assess local businesses and compare their performances stating that businesses that take operations management seriously do significantly better than those that do not.
